Pedaling and Pondering with Photography
In 1982 I've participated in a Coast-to-Coast biking trip, from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida. It took us a month, averaging 90 miles (150 km) per day. This trip was actually a photography course by professor Robin Jensen at Calvin College, Grand Rapids Michigan. This photography course took place during the Interim, which is a period where students can take special cources like 'French in Quebec', 'Art in Paris' or take a dive into Math for a couple of weeks. For me taking pictures on a bike through the US was the perfect way to get to know America, the purpose of that year. My, this is old news! Yes, but just like my other biking trip I've created a Google Earth file, so that you can follow the entire trip. And, after all, this trip has been a high point in my 'biking career', so I thought it would be nice to mention it.
Organization
The entire group consisted of 42 students, the professor and his wife Eleanor, a bus driver, a cook and a van-driver. We were divided into 7 groups, group 1 being the fastest (or at least trying to be :-)) and group 7 being the slowest. The bus driver and cook went ahead every day to prepare our lodging, buy and cook the food. The bus would also bring our luggage to the next stop. The van-driver would assist us during the day with water, fruit, sometimes food when there was no place to go to buy some. And of course you could ride along with the van in case of injury or fatigue.Slides
After 25 years, the slides I've made during the trip have been
digitized. It was fun to seen them again after so many years. And of
course you can also see a selection of the slides.
